Martha Powers

Martha discovered OLLI in January of 2013--a life-altering experience. Now she is Co-chair of Member Services and Chair of the Liaison Sub-committee, and also participates on the Outreach, Hospitality, Development, and Publications Committees. At board meetings, she takes notes on her laptop to assist the secretary.
OLLI has drawn out Martha’s “inner ham.” She’s in the OLLI Players and coordinated Readers’ Theater in Loudoun during Fall 2014. She has presented classes about Liberace, Victor Borge, Carol Burnett (May 1st), and about her book, Losing Marmee: A Mother, a Daughter, and Six Years in Assisted Living. During the spring term she is coordinating the course “Remembering My Hometown.” Martha has presented between-term events like “Hansel & Gretel” and “The Russians Are Coming!” She looks forward to offering “Calendar Girls” in late May.
A graduate of Annandale High School, American University, and Virginia Tech, Martha specialized in consumer direct marketing. She handled fundraising for MADD, Doris Day Animal League, and Help Hospitalized Veterans, and managed a mail-order business for AARP. She also founded Operation Happy Sock: http://ohappysock.blogspot.com/ An estimated 500,000 catnip toys have been distributed to homeless cats over the past decade.
Martha lives in Fairfax with one husband and one cat.

Ray Beery

Ray Beery has been an LRI and OLLI member since 1993. He teaches course nearly every term; most recently online courses on the Kennedy Legacy and the Modern World.     He is a retired Air Force officer and was a program director at Computer Sciences Corporation. He holds an AB in International Relations from Kansas University, an MBA from Missouri and a diploma from the National Defense University.
He served six years on the LRI Board in the 1990s and was president 1999-2000. He led the project committee that activated the Loudoun site in 2007. He headed the search team that brought us our Executive Director, Jennifer Disano.

Corky Rainey

Corky Rainey is a DC native, raised in the metropolitan area, and a graduate from the University of Maryland, with a BA in History. Following graduation, he entered the US Air Force and completed a successful 26 year career, retiring as a Colonel. Most of that career was spent with IT systems, at several bases in the US and one assignment in Tokyo, Japan. During this time, he also completed his MS in Systems Management from USC.
After retiring from the Air Force, he went into the defense industry in 1993 as a marketing manager and retired as a Senior VP for Business Development in 2010. Since retirement, he has been working part-time as a Washington DC tour guide for middle school students/teachers from all over the country.
Corky has been a member of OLLI since 2010 and enjoyed and participated in numerous classes and forums. OLLI has been and is today a highly successful enterprise, but challenges are there in the future. Corky believes that his experience both in the Air Force and industry will allow him, if elected to the Board, to make a meaningful contribution and to provide fresh ideas to address these challenges.

Michelle Blandburg

Michelle Blandburg’s aim in running for the Board of Directors (BoD) is “to help preserve what’s best at OLLI, and to prepare for OLLI’s future.” Michelle discovered the world of OLLI in 2013; she’s been eagerly exploring ever since. She’s active in many fun activities, especially OLLI Players and Readers Theater. Fun alone, however, is not what keeps OLLI working. Michelle is a member of the Dirty Knees Club, the Humanities & Social Sciences Planning group and the Liaison sub-committee, and is a class coordinator. She was also an E-News editor. Michelle’s interest in OLLI’s operation led to attending numerous BoD meetings.
Before retiring, Michelle was a devoted employee of Navy Federal Credit Union for more than 40 years. She held many positions, including Loan Officer and Branch Manager, before focusing on her talent for administrative responsibilities. Her organizational skills led to her favorite positions: Staff Assistant to the Credit Committee and consequently to an Executive Vice President.
Besides OLLI, Michelle volunteers at the Shepherd’s Center of Fairfax-Burke, providing free transportation to senior adults. She’s a proud mother; her daughter is a special education teacher. Originally from Chicago, Michelle came to this area to attend Howard University; she now resides in Springfield.

Bill Taylor

Bill has been a member of OLLI since 2008. He enjoys the variety of class offerings and meeting new people in the classes. He has especially enjoyed the offerings in literature.
He has been active in volunteer activities over the years, holding leadership positions in little league, scouting, and church charitable organizations. He’s currently leading the development of a citizens group that is advocating for improved services for mental illness and substance abuse in Fairfax County. He is retired from the Social Security Administration where he worked as a senior executive and administrative judge.
He and his wife Jane (also an OLLI member) live in Burke, and are parents of three grown children. Bill feels that he has benefited from OLLI, and would like to use his experience to help sustain and improve it.

Emmett Fenlon
Emmett Fenlon is a long-time member who has participated at OLLI in several official capacities. He is currently co-chair of the History and Current Events Program Group, which helps identify teachers and develop courses. Of particular interest has been his work with the National Park Service; he plans and coordinates the National Park Service classes at the Fairfax and Reston campuses. He is currently an active member of both the board's Strategic Planning and Finance committees. In a previous tenure as a member of the Board of Directors, Emmett served as OLLI president from June 2009 thru June 2010.
Emmett has a bachelor’s degree from Le Moyne College and a masters in economics from Syracuse University. He earned his law degree from Georgetown University. Before retirement, he worked as an attorney in private practice and with the United States government.
Emmett believes that “Our OLLI is one of the top among the Osher organizations.” To continue at this level, he believes not only in developing interesting courses, but also in providing opportunities for members to interact and socialize. If elected, he will do his best to make OLLI a valuable and fun place for all its members.

Carl Baxter
A native of rural Oklahoma, Carl has lived in several cosmopolitan places, including Embarrass, Minnesota; Kennewick, Washington; and La Carlotta, Philippines. His best ideas: joining the Peace Corps and marrying the smart and beautiful Judy Harbour. They moved to DeWitt, Arkansas (motto: “ONLY 81.2 miles from Little Rock!”) where he was a guidance counselor and she taught. Two babies came and it was off to Ft. Hood, Texas and a job with the Army, followed by work at the Pentagon with the Army Inspector General as an investigator of allegations against Army generals and senior civilians. Carl performed over 20 investigations. He strove to be courteous, fair, and—since careers were at stake— absolutely accurate.
He and Judy currently help care for their three wonderful grandchildren, garden, walk their disobedient Yorkie, read, go to plays and movies, and TRAVEL to include Israel where a Peace Corps friend lives. There they twice climbed Masada up the notorious “snake trail” to catch the sun rising over the rugged Jordanian mountains: beyond incredible!
Finally, he really appreciates OLLI (and helped teach the Norman Conquests course). When he and Judy were in San Francisco, they gave a heartfelt salute towards Mr. Osher’s house.

Alan Glenn

After retiring in 2013, Alan joined OLLI and immediately found lots of interesting classes, including yoga, films, medical issues of aging and ghost stories. He has served as a speaker in the Crooker Investment Forum and as an occasional class liaison.
He has a degree in economics from Utica College and received an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh in accounting, finance and international banking. For the last 20 years, he served as the chief financial officer and director of risk management for the Farm Credit System Insurance Corporation. Alan met his wife, Judy Blanchard, while working on an international banking project in Saudi Arabia. Like many OLLI members, they enjoy travel and frequently visit their two children who live outside the U.S.
Alan thinks it important to continue learning and investing in yourself as well as contributing to the community where you live. He believes that the inspired group of members and teachers at OLLI represent one of the greatest collections of life and work experience that can be found anywhere in the country. If elected, he looks forward to listening to OLLI members and making a contribution to support the continued growth of this excellent program.
Norma Jean Reck

A longtime member, Norma has watched OLLI become the premier lifelong-learning organization in our area expanding to three campuses in just 25 years. She believes that we can – and must – keep moving forward by continuing to improve our core business and values: offering quality educational and social opportunities in a fun setting while serving our community. While attending OLLI classes and serving as a liaison, she has been continually impressed with our extraordinary membership. She participates in activities of the Outreach Committee and the Cooking Group, for which she has organized outings to restaurants. She organized OLLI’s first Fashion Show, as a fundraiser for the Friends of OLLI and the Development Committee.
After retiring from teaching in Fairfax County, she worked as a publications and communications consultant for corporate and non-profit organizations. She served as president of the Welcome Club of Northern Virginia, working to increase its membership and bring order to its finances. She served on the board of directors for the English Speaking Union and the Ski Club of Washington, DC and on the board for volunteers at the Newseum where she was a tour guide. She is a member of the Broadcast and International Committees at the National Press Club, and was recently awarded the National Press Club Vivian Award for her efforts and support.
