Board of Directors Meeting, June 19

By Susan Todenhoft, Administrator

The OLLI Board of Directors met on June 19 in TA-1 on the Tallwood Campus and elected the following officers: president, Glenn Kamber; vice president, Stephen Canner; treasurer, Stan Schretter; and secretary, Irene Osterman. The president and executive director provided updates on various activities. The Board approved Resolution 150619-1, which added the new slate of OLLI officers to the signature authority on the bank accounts.

Participate in Mason's Study on AgingBy Alice Slayton Clark, Communications Associate/RegistrarGeorge Mason University’s Cognitive Genetics Research Group and Cerebral Hemodynamics Lab are conducting a study on cerebral blood flow patterns in older adults. They have solicited OLLI to see if members would be willing to help.

Participation requires about two and one-half hours to complete some questionnaires and computer tests. Volunteers must

  • Be between the ages of 65 and 85,
  • Have vision 20/40 or better without glasses (contacts are okay, but glasses interfere with headband placement),
  • NOT have a current blood flow problem, and
  • Not have recent head injury.

Study coordinator Amanda Harwood will be at Tallwood (Annex) from 11:10 to 11:40 on July 7 to provide a five-minute presentation and short question-and-answer session on the study. For more information or to participate in the study, please email Amanda directly: aharwood@gmu.edu

Still Wanted: OLLI History Photos

By Carol Henderson, Member 25th Anniversary Committee

As noted in the April 24 OLLI E-News, the OLLI Mason 25th Anniversary Committee is seeking photos to use in a book on our history to document early and more recent OLLI events and activities. We encourage members to contribute photos for this effort. We have some photos, and some people have provided a few more, but we hope there are more that you might be able to find and send.

Martha Scanlon is coordinating collection of snapshots or printed photos. If you have such printed pictures you would like to submit, please place them in an envelope labeled "Martha Scanlon" on the front, clearly indicate (e.g., attach to each photo) the name of the submitter, the name(s) of any individuals you can identify for us in the photo, and state whether you want the photos returned when we have processed them. You may bring printed copies to your local OLLI office and the staff will make sure they are delivered to Martha Scanlon at Tallwood.

If you have digital picture files to contribute, you can simply attach them to an email sent to a special Gmail account we have set up for this purpose, or if you prefer to post them on the internet, let us know where we can access them. The email address is olli25th.photos@gmail.com.

If you have any hard-copy or digital photos taken at OLLI events or activities that might be suitable, please contact us at the above email address, or carolchenderson@mac.com. Thank you!

Apple Computer Users

By Paul Howard, Computer Club Coordinator

A warm invitation is extended to OLLI Apple computer users to participate in joint meetings of the OLLI Personal Computer User Group (OPCUG) and the Potomac Area Technology and Computer Society (PATACS; see http://www.patacs.org/).

Increasingly, presentations and discussions related to Apple products take place. For example, two relevant presentations were given on June 20: “Phone, Tablet, Bluetooth, Cloud” by Dave Mason and “Moving From PC to Mac” by Lorrin Garson. Historically, focus has been on PCs/Microsoft Windows, but that is quickly changing to cover more diverse topics. Apple computer users have much to contribute and learn by joining in.

OPCUG and PATACS meet jointly on the third Saturday of the month at Tallwood. The next meeting is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, starting at 1:00 in TA-1. Please join us!

Ask Uncle OlliBy Uncle Olli, Driver Safety Consultant Uncle Olli has lived in Northern Virginia most of his lifetime, and has encountered most every every traffic situation that might raise a question, however trivial it might seem. Ask Uncle Olli at ollienewseditor@gmail.com. He is embarrassed by nothing!

OLLI member Roy Bucholtz asks the following question:

Thank you for your continuing information and helpful hints.

The June 19, 2015, column refers to a “stop light.” The context leads me to doubt that you are referring to a flashing red light, which is the only

“stop light.” Otherwise, it is a “traffic light,” which of course may be green or red or yellow.

Uncle Olli replies:

Oops!

The question was "AT STOP LIGHTS, OR IN STOP AND GO TRAFFIC, HOW FAR BACK SHOULD YOUR CAR BE FROM THE CAR IN FRONT OF YOU?

A good rule of thumb is, if stopped, far enough to see the rear tires of the car in front of you; if moving, a distance behind as far as your car will travel in three seconds. Danger and traffic is ever-changing, however, and this will not always be possible. Another rule of thumb might be, if your passengers get nervous, edgy, or alarmed, you are probably too close."

Uncle OLLI misspoke. Of course, I meant to say "WHEN STOPPED AT RED LIGHTS." I must have been a trifle lightheaded from stoking my Stanley Steamer. (Hey, electric cars came back; why not my Steamer?)
