Mason President and Provost Emeritus Visit OLLI

By Jennifer Disano, Executive Director

OLLI Mason enjoyed two outstanding lectures in September, as part of an ongoing effort to bring more programming events between terms. Mason University President, Dr. Angel Cabrera and Mason Provost Emeritus, Dr. Peter Stearns visited Tallwood with teleconferenced projection to Loudoun. Both gave excellent presentations.

Dr. Cabrera spoke on Being Global: How to Think, Act and Lead in a Transformed World discussing what kind of people are global leaders and what sort of talents they have. He also touched on understanding the global economy, consumerism and personal responsibility for global citizens. Click here to see Dr. Cabrera’s talk.

Dr. Stearns brought to us a wonderful lecture, Why Do Modern People Have Children? Dr. Stearns discussed key changes in modern societies’ relationship to children – from birth control to a redefinition of what children are for to decisions not to have any children at all. He explored this personal slice of modern history, including questions about contemporary parental dissatisfaction, and the rise of single women bent on having children “anyway.” Click here to See Dr. Stearns’ talk.

Classes and Special Events Status for Fall Term

Fall term has arrived at OLLI Mason and there are still plenty of classes and special events available for registration. Check out this great colored chart which shows all open, closed and canceled classes and Special Events: click here for colored chart.

“Green Means Go!” Go and take a class that you might think is not your cup of tea. Get outside your comfort zone and jump into the unknown. You may surprise yourself!

Red indicates a closed event/class, but don’t be too discouraged. Often OLLI programs are repeated from time to time and you may have another chance to get into that preferred event/class later in the year.

Black ink equals a canceled class. Classes are almost always canceled by instructors but some are canceled due to low enrollment.

As you can see there is a lot of green to be had across all OLLI campuses, so go ahead and sign up today!

Notes from Board of Directors Meeting, September 19

By Irene Osterman, Board Secretary

The Board meeting opened with praise for Jennifer Disano who has now been Executive Director for one year.

A major focus of the Board continues to be the space issue at Tallwood. The strategic planning committee reported that an engineering assessment will be conducted by Mason in October. If use of Tallwood is viable, the 3- to 5-year plan will be to continue at Tallwood and rent additional space as needed. One long-term option will be explored by participating in a planning process being undertaken by Mason and the city of Fairfax that might result in new space being available to us. The process will kick off with a three-day meeting in early November. We will have representatives there.

The Board will be meeting to hear a special presentation from INTO, a contractor hired by Mason to serve incoming international students, concerning potential language assistance OLLI members might provide to the students.

New Faces in the OLLI Offices!

By Alice Slayton Clark, Communications Associate

The OLLI Administrative Team has expanded! Welcome Susan Todenhoft and Ken Wade, who recently stepped into positions as site coordinators for Church of the Good Shepherd (COGS) and Reston, respectively.

Susan, a self-described “freelance musician,” directs the young children's choirs as a member of the music staff at COGS. At home, she teaches flute in her private studio. And if that is not enough, in her free time, she serves as webmaster and a director for the Flute Society of Washington, Inc., and is district director for the Atlantic 2 area of Mu Phi Epsilon Professional Music Fraternity. Susan earned degrees in music and business from the University of Maryland, and also studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A Kentuckian by birth, she currently lives in Burke with her husband Walter, a recently retired member of the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.” Susan has two grown children, Sarah and Karl, both living in Texas.

Ken is a graduate of George Mason University where he earned a degree in Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources. Since then, he has been a jack of many trades, working for a few Fairfax operations such as the George Mason Aquatic Center, Community and Recreation Services, Park Authority, and the Reston Community Center. In his spare time, Ken likes to draw, listen to music, read or just enjoy outdoor sports or a long walk.

Take a moment to say “hello” to them next time you are in class at COGS or Reston.

Meet OLLI Original Members

By Alice Slayton Clark, Communications Associate

After retiring from a career in finance in 1989, Bob Overholtzer became an originating member of the nascent Learning in Retirement Institute (LRI) at Mason, forerunner of OLLI. He exemplifies the OLLI motto -- learning for the sheer love of learning. Born and raised in Iowa, he earned bachelor's and master's degrees in economics from the University of Iowa. He became a platoon leader in the U.S. Army, and later worked many years for General Electric. Some of his most memorable times were spent as Financial Director for their European Operations in Geneva and Brussels. Still later, he became Chief Financial Officer and co-Chief Executive Officer with Mohasco Corporation, working in northern Virginia.

Bob remembers early days at LRI when members often had to move about for classes. He was pleased when eventually Mason agreed to dedicate a campus to the LRI, donating the area that is now Tallwood. That made logistics a lot easier for students, he recalls. As OLLI has grown over the years, Bob has been particularly impressed with the breadth of classes and professional instructors.

Bob also relishes OLLI’s synergies with Road Scholar (formerly Elderhostel), traveling several years ago on a safari to Kenya and a spin around Italy. He now takes multiple classes every term in the areas of history, finance, economics and music, and looks forward to pursuing new reads in the lending library at Tallwood. He considers OLLI a wonderful institution in helping him enjoy his retirement years.

Although Bob considers himself “lazy” these days, he is anything but. In addition to his robust class schedule and reading endeavors, Bob plays golf, cares for his poodles, and manages the household because his wife Joyce is frequently off teaching classes on Japanese flower arrangements.

All the best OLLI wishes to Bob and Joyce as they mark their 60th wedding anniversary this year with a celebratory cruise with their two children!

90th Birthday Music Premiere

By Carol Henderson, Former Reston Coordinator

Gloria Sussman, who has been teaching "The Ongoing Pleasures of Music" class at OLLI in Reston since 1999, is celebrating a very special birthday. It's her 90th, and she told her sons Ted and Bob that she wanted to celebrate it by having a musical work commissioned by composer Scott Solak to be played by the three Chamasyan sisters, all talented musicians. The free premiere is coming up on Thursday, October 2 at 2:15 as part of OLLI's Meet the Artists series of concerts at the Reston Community Center in Hunters Woods.

Gloria and her new commissioned work have been the subject of local publicity. Find out more about this popular teacher and her remarkable font of musical knowledge in either of two recent articles. One is a feature authored by OLLI members Carol Henderson and Rosemary McDonald in the fall issue of Reston magazine. See pages 30 to 33 in the following link:

http://issuu.com/restonassociation/docs/reston_fall_2014/1.

The other article appeared in the September 17-23 issue of the Reston Connection newspaper in a piece by Caroline Burr, "A Concert for Gloria," on p. 13. This article was also highlighted through a link to the Reston Connection's online version in Reston Now, a local news website covering Reston. See the link below to the online version of this article.

http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/news/2014/sep/10/concert-gloria/

Be sure to attend this very special music event, whether or not you are signed up for the Meet the Artists series. The Reston Community Center Theater has plenty of space and it's free. Gloria welcomes all music lovers to enjoy the premiere, the other selections to be played , and the reception following, where you'll have a chance to celebrate with Gloria and meet the composer and the performers.

New Book by OLLI Member

By Ruta Sevo, Author and OLLI Member

OLLI member Ruta Sevo published her novel White Bird, which features Nepal travel, discovery of Buddhism, shamans, séances, and sex.

Buddhist fiction: A man travels to Nepal to scatter his brother’s ashes. He discovers his brother had a love child who became an unlikely Tibetan Buddhist shaman. The journey recreates his family and his sense of himself.

It is in the tradition of writers bringing the East to the West, like E.M. Forster and the Victorians Alexandra David-Neel and Madam Blavatsky.

Available as paperback, Kindle or iBook.

Answers to your pressing questions about OLLI etiquette

By Ms. Ollie Ettakit,  OLLI E-News Manners Expert

Gentle readers: Here's a succinct reminder of the most essential rules to remember for OLLI classroom etiquette, submitted by Martha Powers, Liaison Committee Chair, in the form of a brief poem which she too humbly identified as:

Martha’s Pathetic Poem
Sign in and wear your name tag,
   and throw your trash away.
Turn your phone to vibrate
(it’s much more fun that way!)

Four More Musical Clerihews

Such an innovation of Monteverdi
Giving opera to poster’ity,
For which I often think he ought
To be stabbed, poisoned, strangled, and shot!
                   ------------
Schubert completed his Trout Quintet
And realized he hadn’t eaten, yet.
He left his house, exclaiming, “ Now
“I vill dine on forelle blau!”
                    ------------
“The Donau’s not blue, but grey”,
A critic was heard to say.
Strauss muttered something Viennese, and rude,
Saying, “ I do waltzes, not verisimilitude!”
                   ------------
Rimsky-Korsakov, a Russian, and thus, neurotic,
Loved odd music and themes exotic.
When asked, “Do you know Scheherazade?”
He said, “ Da, I always thought her strange, b’ God!
