Dr. Stearns brought to us a wonderful lecture, Why Do Modern People Have Children? Dr. Stearns discussed key changes in modern societies’ relationship to children – from birth control to a redefinition of what children are for to decisions not to have any children at all. He explored this personal slice of modern history, including questions about contemporary parental dissatisfaction, and the rise of single women bent on having children “anyway.” Click

The Board meeting opened with praise for Jennifer Disano who has now been Executive Director for one year.
Susan, a self-described “freelance musician,” directs the young children's choirs as a member of the music staff at COGS. At home, she teaches flute in her private studio. And if that is not enough, in her free time, she serves as webmaster and a director for the Flute Society of Washington, Inc., and is district director for the Atlantic 2 area of Mu Phi Epsilon Professional Music Fraternity. Susan earned degrees in music and business from the University of Maryland, and also studied at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. A Kentuckian by birth, she currently lives in Burke with her husband Walter, a recently retired member of the U.S. Army Band, “Pershing’s Own.” Susan has two grown children, Sarah and Karl, both living in Texas.
Ken is a graduate of George Mason University where he earned a degree in Health, Fitness and Recreation Resources. Since then, he has been a jack of many trades, working for a few Fairfax operations such as the George Mason Aquatic Center, Community and Recreation Services, Park Authority, and the Reston Community Center. In his spare time, Ken likes to draw, listen to music, read or just enjoy outdoor sports or a long walk. 
Although Bob considers himself “lazy” these days, he is anything but. In addition to his robust class schedule and reading endeavors, Bob plays golf, cares for his poodles, and manages the household because his wife Joyce is frequently off teaching classes on Japanese flower arrangements.
Gloria Sussman, who has been teaching "The Ongoing Pleasures of Music" class at OLLI in Reston since 1999, is celebrating a very special birthday. It's her 90th, and she told her sons Ted and Bob that she wanted to celebrate it by having a musical work commissioned by composer Scott Solak to be played by the three Chamasyan sisters, all talented musicians. The free premiere is coming up on Thursday, October 2 at 2:15 as part of OLLI's Meet the Artists series of concerts at the Reston Community Center in Hunters Woods.
OLLI member Ruta Sevo published her novel White Bird, which features Nepal travel, discovery of Buddhism, shamans, séances, and sex.
