The Snow Paralyzes Everything...
Including OLLI By John Nash, E-News EditorSnowmageddon or Snowzilla…but definitely NOTSnowmini! This massive snow storm impacted most everyone and every organization in Northern Virginia, including OLLI.To keep members informed, an OLLI bulletin flashed to members that OLLI would be closed last Friday and throughout the weekend. A subsequent bulletin was sent during the weekend announcing that OLLI would continue to be closed through Tuesday and that all classes would be suspended during that time. But the snow and the road conditions proved too challenging and OLLI closed for the rest of the week.So who or what decides to close OLLI and suspend classes and meetings? According to Jennifer Disano, OLLI Executive Director, decisions to close classes and offices at all three OLLI locations (Fairfax, Reston, Loudoun) because of weather conditions are based on a number of factors, including the forecast severity of the weather, the decisions of the Fairfax and Loudoun county school systems, and closing/delays at Mason. “We try to make a decision to close by 8:30 am in order for an email to go out to all members and teachers." Jennifer also noted that as a general rule, if the public schools are closed or delayed, then OLLI classes follow the same course of action. However, an email from OLLI is the ultimate notification of closing, as road and parking lot conditions at our facilities need to be assessed.One of the major considerations that OLLI faces when making weather-related decisions is the unique composition of its membership. “We are very concerned about placing our members in unsafe situations when attending classes, meetings or visiting the offices,” said Jennifer.In addition to receiving OLLI E-Blasts with class or meeting changes, members can go to the OLLI website at www.ollidev.earthcare.com to find the latest status or call the OLLI office. “We always try to keep our membership informed of program changes or office closures as soon as possible,” said Jennifer.
Fun Facts to Celebrate OLLI's 25th Anniversary By Ray Beery, Member, Board of DirectorsThe Learning in Retirement Institute (LRI) held a five-year celebration party on April 13, 1996, at the Virginian Retirement Community in Fairfax. We're on the way to 25 years!OLLI is celebrating its 25th year of classes for seniors in 2016. We'll be publishing fun facts and interesting milestones about the institute and OLLI each week that OLLI E-News is published, until the end of the 2016 fall term.
The next meeting of the History Club will be on Wednesday, Feb 3, at 2:15 in TA-1. Our presenter will be David Heymsfeld speaking on “A Comparison of Media Coverage of World War II and Vietnam.”
David will use videos to demonstrate his points. It is a truism that media coverage of the Vietnam War brought that conflict into our homes in ways we never before experienced. A comparison with WWII will highlight the differences. I’m sure there will be much to discuss.
A special reminder: We now must register for the History Club as we do for classes. (#746 on the course listing). The good news is that a registration for the winter term is good for the entire year. If you don’t receive the special announcement of the Feb 3 meeting that is sent to members on the list, please do register for the Club.
As usual, all History Club members are welcome to bring a guest; other OLLI members do not have to be an “official” member of the club to attend our meetings.

Rosalyn Lurie, a former member of OLLI and a resident of Leesburg, passed away on Saturday, Jan 23. Services will be held at Schlossberg Solomon Memorial Chapel, 824 Washington St., Canton, MA, on Sunday, Jan 31 at 12 noon, with burial to follow at Sharon Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to any organization conducting research for the treatment and cure of cancer or heart disease.
Rosemary Reardon passed away peacefully in her sleep Jan 25. Born in 1923, she was a member of OLLI for many years and has many friends here. Arrangements are being handled by Demaine Funeral Home in Fairfax.
